I started looking through different blogs sites and browsed different magazines and websites for ideas. I came across papersandmore.com. I was able to find good deals on material we could use and then my creative juices started to flow.
I took on the challenge in designing my own invites. I’m very familiar with adobe illustrator and photoshop, so I started to play around with images and layouts. I even was able to create my own image and not have to “borrow” from a website.
I was able to design something that I was completely satisfied with not break the bank. My fiance and family really loved how they turned out. We did however spent more than I wanted, but after all the trials and errors and getting the right materials, it was worth it.
Here's how ours turned out:

Luckily, one of my MOH has an Uncle that owns his own printing company, so I was able to get a good deal on the printing and the cutting too (Crazy how much printing companies charge you per cut!! High way robbery). It really helped on cost to have hook ups.
When you think about it…you pay a TON on getting the invites produced and all cut for you, but then you have to pay for the postage and the mailing labels etc. It all adds up!!
A few tips:
•Do some research on invites you have in mind. Whether you want a tri fold, simple fold, all these inserts etc, each piece cost mula…so try going for simple.
•Think about how much paper you’re going to use and is it worth spending that kind of money when you’re guest may just throw it away. (think about using recycled paper)..the more paper you use the more that comes out of your wallet.
•Postage: The more you put in your envelopes (tri-folds, inserts, etc), the heavier its going to weigh so more money their.
•RSVP cards: I originally wanted to do it online, but it was complicated to set up. So we ended up doing post card RSVP cards instead to save on stamps (which is only 28 cents) and not have to use the envelopes and whatnot
•Assembling yourselves can take up some time, but if it’s simple then it’ll be done in no time. Get a group together or ask your wedding party to help out so you can have an assembly line then it’ll get done quickly. It’s worth the money you save in trying to take care of the cutting and stuffing and all.
•Research on materials too. This could factor into the cost on invites. If you’re looking to do letterpress or something fancy, you have to have special paper for that and it’s costly. Laser printing is perfectly fine and it’s more cost effective.
*I purchased most of my materials through paperandmore.com and my envelopes through envelopemall.com
*OR save the weekly coupons you receive in the mail from your local craft store.
Think of it this way, more elegant or elaborate, the more costly it can be. So try DIY and it could cut the cost in half. It’s worth taking the time to research different ideas and design something on your own. Getting the store bought ones is a good “quick-fix” solution, but there’s no uniqueness behind it cause it’s store produced. (That’s just my thought)
Check out wedding blogs: like weddingbee, weddingwire, projectwedding etc. Sometimes they have vendors post up inquires and deals on discount wedding invites. I’d also checked out etsy.com. I absolutely LOVE this site. It’s a good way to connect with independent designers that produce them at home and can give you good deals. You can get other stuff for your wedding, veils, fascinators, wedding gifts etc. You can even find cheaper items there than buying stuff at the local craft store.
Hope this helps on your quest to find the right wedding invites.
